A/Prof. Matthias trained and worked in England, Australia and the USA. He trained in reproductive immunology as a special interest in Chicago under Professor Alan Beer and subsequently introduced this concept and service under the name Sydney Reproductive Immunology, established in 1995.
He caters for women with immune issues affecting their reproductive system, hormones and pregnancy. He is heavily involved in training of medical students registrars and young specialists. His Gynaecology interests include general gynaecology, laparoscopic, pelvic floor and incontinence surgery. In addition to colposcopy, gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive immunology (e.g. repeated miscarriages and endometriosis).
He has academic and research interests and authored many publications and is a Associate Professor and Senior Examiner with the Australian Medical Council. He has two teenage boys
