How does this change knee arthroplasty?

The NAVIO’s impressive capabilities include the ability to map the patient’s knee in real-time as a 3D model, allowing virtual placement of the implant to predict postoperative joint laxity.

During surgery, the advanced computer program relays precise patient-centric information to the hand-piece. Removing the damaged bone and cartilage of the knee can be done while assessing the patient’s anatomy on a real-time screen.

The improved joint’s laxity can also be assessed before the surgery is complete by moving the leg through flexion/extension, confirming successful alignment and placement.

The NAVIO mitigates the challenges of traditional methods of knee surgery, and simplifies the surgical process without the extra steps required with existing robotic-assisted technology, such as CT scans, cutting blocks and guides. As a portable device, it eliminates bulky, fixed electronic arms.

The NAVIO is considered a sterile device that avoids the risk of infection to patients. It uses an implant with a seven-year track record of successful clinical outcomes recorded by the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR). Some robotic systems currently in use require new specifically designed implants, which can increase risk of complications for patients.

The NAVIO’s advanced computer program relays precise information about your knee to a robotic handpiece used by your skilled surgeon during the operation. It’s a four-step process:

  1. A 3D model of your knee is first captured through direct surface mapping.
  2. Your surgeon virtually places the implant to predict postoperative joint laxity and ensure the course of action will have the desired outcome.
  3. The surgeon removes the damaged bone and cartilage of the knee, and adds implant using real-time imagery.
  4. The surgeon then evaluates the improved joint’s laxity through moving the leg, confirming successful alignment and placement.
